Values are what people hold dear, what they praise above all else. These are aspects, ideals or objects significant for each of us from different areas of life.
Values highlight what we defend. This is a part of us, our unique individual essence. Life priorities reflect our response, they provide each of us with a code of conduct. And we get relief if we follow and honour personal values.
Otherwise, bad habits prevail, the person degrades or returns to childhood to raise self-esteem.

Step one. Begin the opening process with a newbie mind.
When we ask ourselves a question, our awareness often gives a quick answer. But you should not use ready-made answers when opening personal values. So that there is no bias of ideas. Let your mind be in tune with the beginner’s mood. Then you will have access to inner truths. Anything that your conscious mind is not yet aware of.
Empty your mind by taking a few deep breaths. As you go through all the steps, remember that your mind does not know the answers to questions. Create a space for your revelations and insights. Tune your emotional and mental state. This is an important first step towards discovering your personal values.
Step two. List your priorities.
For many, compiling a list like this will be difficult. On the Internet, you can find both 200 and 400 values of personal qualities and priorities. Just don’t use them.
Personal values should be discovered and disclosed, not picked out of a list. When you look through the list of values, your mind will analyze and check which of them will be “better” and which are “worse”. But, for those who find it difficult to work with values, you can use a list. This will give you an idea of your options.
Three tips to help you figure out your top priorities. Think about situations, answer yourself the questions below, and write out the values that come up in your mind.

Answer the questions about how you feel at the moment of the peak experience.
- What happened to you?

Step three. Divide your personal priorities into creating related groups.
You have passed the second step. Combine all your answers. This will be your basic personal values list. When you find that there are 20 to 40 values in the list, it will be overkill. Therefore, the next step is to group these values by topic. For example, values such as responsibility, timeliness, accountability will be linked under one topic.
Put learning, development, and growth into one group. These priorities also relate to the same topic. Values such as belonging, connection, intimacy, group together.
Step four. Highlight a central theme in each group.
For example, you have a group of values that includes sincerity, probity, integrity, honesty, truth, transparency. Among these words, choose the one that best reflects the group. Of these values, integrity may be the central theme.
To give the selected word more context, you can add a few more words in parentheses. Do this work with all the other groups.
Step five. Identify your top personal baseline priorities.
After the fourth step, the list of topics and values can remain even larger. The following questions will help to shorten this list, or rather unite the groups of values if there are many of them.
- which values do you consider important in your life?
- What are you proud of in your life, what values does it reflect?
- Which values are your “work” based on profession, project, business?
- What is the foundation of your identity and self-esteem?
- Which makes you feel confident? What values you have embodied to nurture this feeling?
- If you have a hobby, what values do you implement in it?
Each person is unique, with their own specific strengths and weaknesses. For everyone, his personal values are closest.
How many top priorities should finally be identified? If you allocate a large number, you will forget about them, you will not use them. If you define a few values, then all the unique property of your character are not covered.
The number of personal priorities ranges from 5 to 12 values. Each person has their own, but the range is about the same.
List the highlighted values in order of importance. What is most important to you? This is the hardest part of the eight steps. You may need to do this step several times before performing it.
Once you’ve made your list the first time, put it aside. The next day, read everything you wrote again. See what you agree with today, and what needs to be changed, rearranged in your list. Repeat this step several times.
Values are the keywords of your entire life, it cannot fix them in 1-2 days. Set aside at least a week for a leisurely analysis.
Step six. Ranking personal values in life.
Everything is simple here: you need to arrange values according to the internal weights of importance. We recommend using sorting with a pair-wise comparison of values:
- What is more important to me first or second?

- If you have to choose what to implement, “Which one would I most likely prefer”?
Step seven. Pack your personal values in life.
Creative work awaits you in this step. To clearly articulate each meaning, highlight them in phrases or sentences that are memorable. This will allow each highlighted value to add emotion and greater retention.

- Use vocabulary and words that inspire. Our consciousness quickly ignores what is commonplace or commonplace.

- Or are there those among them that seem alien to you, not yours?
- Check the list for order of importance.
- Are they in the correct order? This is not your last list.
You can always make any changes and additions.
Are you living your chosen personal values?
When you have 5 to 10 basic values left, see how you live them. How well you uphold each of the values. Rate each on a scale of 1 to 10. Where 10 is the optimal score.
Determine your level of satisfaction from each priority. You can write it down in a notepad or in a PDF document. Enter the date at the top of the column. Do this assessment once a month or quarter. This way you can measure your progress.
For example, you scored 7 points for one value. What changes need to be made, what needs to increase respect for this value?

For example, a family will change your life, or a new business will change it. Step into the future picture as much as you can. Bring this picture to life in your mind and let it live there.
After a month, test your personal values, while keeping the picture alive in your mind. Priority indicators not rising? Is there friction with your core values? Do this process constantly. This will bring a new level of understanding into your decision-making process.
